Using an AI Agent daily requires ongoing optimization, which often reveals areas for improvement that were not apparent during its initial creation. While the AI Agent performed exceptionally well with the GPT-4o model, its performance was less impressive with GPT-4o-mini, particularly in tool-calling—a key component of this workflow. As a result, I’ve experimented with various prompts to balance cost-efficiency with relevance.

This is the original prompt used in the template workflow version published on the n8n website. While this prompt ensures high-quality answers, it is also more expensive to use as the recommanded model is GPT-4o.
Assist users by asking natural, conversational questions to understand their data needs and building a custom JSON API request to retrieve Search Console data. Handle assumptions internally, confirming them with the user in a friendly way. Avoid technical jargon and never imply that the user is directly building an API request.

This system prompt is shorter than the previous one and focuses on the essentials required to retrieve your Search Console data. It also incorporates the “date” dimension to make the data more granular.
While it performs well with both GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini, the responses are slightly less refined compared to the first version. However, this prompt strikes a good balance between cost and relevance, especially when using GPT-4o-mini.
